Travel with G was nominated for the Liebster Award! I’m so excited…

Wait… What’s the Liebster Award?

Just to come clean here, when I first received the nomination via Twitter, I had no idea what the Liebster Award was, since I’m new to blogging. Thanks to Google, here’s the scoop:

The Liebster Award is an award given by bloggers, who already have a Liebster, to other bloggers. Maybe this award means nothing outside the virtual world, but it means a lot to me as a newbie blogger!

I’d like to thank Morgan for nominating my Travel with G for this award. Gracias!! Morgan is one brave girl – after graduating (with highest honors) from college last year, she moved to South Korea, where she’s been teaching English. You can read all about her travels on her blog, A Beautiful View.

Part of the award process is to answer questions posed by the person who nominated you, so people can get to know you and your blog better. Here are my answers to Morgan’s questions:

Describe your ultimate dream trip (if money and time were not an issue)

There’s a dream trip I have – well, it’s a dream that my husband and I have. He taught me to love sailing. We want to sail around the world. Our adventure would take place over 15 months and cover 26,000 nautical miles. We would cross the Panama Canal – and sail to places like the Galapagos & the Marquesas. We’d cruise French Polynesia, Tahiti, Bora Bora, Fiji, and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. From there, we’d sail to Bali, hit Mauritius, and then to Cape Town. Finally, we’d sail across the South Atlantic to Brazil, then to the Windward Islands, arriving at Saint Lucia 🙂

Who are your daily inspirations?

This list is not all-inclusive, but these are some of the most inspiring people in my life. My dad, who’s been gone for years now, but whom I think about every day. He was an exceptional man, with the soul of an adventurer. My mom, one of the strongest women I know. She also taught me about getting out of your comfort zone and exploring the world. My daughter, who doesn’t stop surprising me with her maturity, tenacity, and immense capacity for love. My husband, who is my rock, a lover of life, and whom I admire and respect. My sis… She’s another strong woman – and I love her to death. She won’t take crap from anyone and believes I shouldn’t either. My grandma… She’s 99. She is one tough lady – the matriarch of our family.

What is your favorite transportation method?

Trains! I’ve been on many memorable trains – and there’s many more I want to ride. I even have a list! I think it’s probably the most romantic form of transportation (aside from sailing) – and it’s a great opportunity to learn about the geography and culture of a place. You also get a chance to write, photograph, and connect with other travelers. You can read about my dventure riding on the second highest train in the world here! (In Peru).

Do you prefer urban adventures or nature escapes? Why?

I can’t just pick one because I like both. I’m crazy about cities, big and small, but I also like nature. New York City and Paris are some of my favorite places to visit, and I feel extremely happy among buildings, noise, people, streets. But I also really appreciate nature. I hiked the Inca Trail for 8 days and I think that’s been one of the most amazing adventures of my life – and I didn’t miss any of the things that I enjoy so much during my urban escapes.

Chocolate, vanilla, or swirl?

It could be any of the 3 – just depends on my mood 🙂

What are your top three favorite destinations? Why?

This is hard to answer because I have been to so many memorable and amazing places in my life that could easily be the top 3. But here’s the ones that come to mind right away: Amalfi Coast, Amsterdam, Machu Picchu. And this is why:

When I first went to the Amalfi Coast, I was stunned by the beauty of the place. The first photo below is Positano. What can I say, this is one of my favorite places in the world. Positano is picture-perfect – the way the colorful houses are perched on the hills with magnificent views of the ocean, the mountains, the delicious food, the history, the friendly Italians of the South, and because it’s romantic – you never want to leave.

Amsterdam. I love the architecture and the feel of the place as you walk along the canals, day or night. Plus, there’s a special house there – The Annex (Anne Frank’s hiding place for 2 years during WWII before she was dragged off to Auschwitz), which I was honored to visit, as it fulfilled a childhood dream. Growing up, I read The Diary of Anne Frank many times. She inspired me to start writing when I was a kid – and I always admired her strength of character and love for life.

Machu Picchu – the Lost City of the Incas. Words are insufficient to describe this place. This is in the land of my ancestors, and I have been there several times. Each time is different – it’s a wondrous, spiritual place that moves you. Hiking the Inca Trail was an amazing experience for my mind, body, and soul – and it’s one that I will never forget.

What is your least favorite destination?

I think something that can greatly affect your travels negatively is if you get sick. And that is what happened to us – in Fez (Morocco). I’d say that in our amazing travels in Morocco (we traveled through Tangier, Rabat, and Casablanca), Fez was our least favorite destination because my husband got very, very sick. What made the whole experience worse was that we were staying right in the ancient medina – and we had no access to medical care. The hotel staff didn’t seem to understand the gravity of the situation, which made it more frustrating – and scary.

Before the sickness episode, though, we did get a chance to experience and appreciate the beauty of Fez. And, today, despite the unfortunate episode in Fez, I yearn to return to Morocco.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?

I would tell my younger self to learn not to let other people’s negative opinions and attitudes affect my well-being. To just continue to be me – full of love for life and people.

Do you ever plan on “settling down” and leading a more conventional life?

My adventures around the world started when I was a kid. I have lived and been educated in 3 continents, 5 countries, and many cities. As an adult, I have continued to travel (I don’t have a cute map with pins on it, but I think it’s 30+ so far – hopefully many more to go). Traveling is a priority in my life. I’m always packing and unpacking bags and constantly preparing for the next travel adventure. I can’t have a dog (sad) or a greenhouse because I would not be around for them. It’s difficult to make plans in advance with family/friends because I may be traveling. I don’t know if my lifestyle is unconventional – but if leading a more conventional life means not traveling as much, then, the answer’s no.

Name at least five songs that would be on your ultimate travel playlist.

  1. #41, Dave Matthews Band
  2. Sunday Bloody Sunday, U2
  3. Summertime Sadness/mix, Lana del Rey
  4. La Pachanga, Vilma Palma e Vampiros
  5. Cuando Pase el Temblor, Soda Stereo

If someone wrote a book about your travel life, what would it be called?

Packs, Shoots, and Writes ~ (I know – weird).

Ok, so there it is! Thanks again to Morgan, A Beautiful View, for nominating Travel with G!

The other part of the award process is to pass on the love by nominating other bloggers. Before I get to that, though, there are some rules the nominees will follow if they choose to accept the award. The blogger will write a blog post following these rules:

  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you with a link back to his/her blog
  2. Answer the 11 questions your nominator asks you
  3. Nonimate 5 – 11 bloggers, with under 500 followers, who you think are awesome and deserving of this honor (I’m guessing it means 500 Twitter followers? Could be. Or not).
  4. Create 11 questions for your nominees
  5. Display the Liebster Award logo on your page
  6. List these 6 rules on your post

Now, without further delay, below are my chosen nominees! These are great blogs – check them out!

Congrats you guys!! I look forward to reading your answers and checking out the blogs of your nominees 🙂

Here are Travel with G’s new questions:

  1. What made you decide to blog about travel & how did you come up with the name of your blog?
  2. How often do you update your blog with a post – and how much time, on the average, does it take you to create & complete the post?
  3. What sort of things do you do to prepare for your next travel destination?
  4. How do you choose your next travel destination? Is it a well though-out decision, or are you the kind of traveler that just picks a place randomly?
  5. What are the 3 things you MUST have in your travel bag?
  6. What is one of your top travel memories?
  7. Multiple choice: I usually stay at: (a) Hostel, (b) Bed & Breakfast, (c) airbnb, or (d) hotel?
  8. Travel binging – yes or no? (Would you rather see a ton of cities in one trip, or do you prefer to stay longer in one place and move around less?)
  9. List 3 books (or movies) that have inspired you to travel.
  10. Do you prefer to travel solo, with a partner, or in groups?
  11. What advice would you give someone who has never left their own country but wants to travel?

Cheers,
G.
